Moroccan Cultural Note

Asking for repetition is normal and useful. Moroccans may speak quickly, connect words or mix Darija with French, Amazigh or formal Arabic. A polite learner who uses 3afak, smн li and a friendly tone will usually receive help. Do not pretend to understand important information; ask again.

Common Learner Mistakes

  • ma-fhmt-š means I did not understand. ma-n-3rf means I do not know. They are not interchangeable in every context.
  • Use 3awd to a man and 3awdi to a woman.
  • šnu glti? can sound abrupt if your tone is sharp. Add smн li or 3afak for politeness.
  • Do not switch immediately to English or French. First use one rescue expression and stay in Darija.

Practice Exercises

  1. Translate into Darija: I do not understand.
  2. Choose the correct form: Repeat, please — speaking to a woman.
  3. Translate into English: b šwiya 3afak.
  4. Complete the question: šnu _____?
  5. Ask for meaning: What does this word mean?
  6. Create a rescue phrase: Say that you do not know how to say it.

Answer Key

  1. ma-fhmt-š.
  2. 3awdi 3afak.
  3. Slowly, please.
  4. glti
  5. šnu kat-3ni had l-klma?
  6. ma-3rft-š kifaš ngulha.
