LESSON 77

Using One Verb After Another

Lesson objective

In this lesson, you will learn how to use two verbs together in one sentence.

Two verbs in English

In English, the second verb is often an infinitive: I want to read. He likes to cook. We forgot to call you. She began to study yesterday. Darija does not have an infinitive in the same way — instead, use the present-tense form of the second verb without ka-.

Removing “ka-”

EnglishPresent tenseWithout ka-
I gokan-mšin-mši
You go — masculinekat-mšit-mši
He goeskay-mšiy-mši
She goeskat-mšit-mši
We gokan-mšiun-mšiu
You go — pluralkat-mšiut-mšiu
They gokay-mšiuy-mšiu

Using the forms after “bġa”

EnglishDarija
I want to gobġit n-mši.
You want to go — singularbġiti t-mši.
He wants to gobġa y-mši.
She wants to gobġat t-mši.
We want to gobġina n-mšiu.
You want to go — pluralbġitu t-mšiu.
They want to gobġau y-mšiu.

More examples

kan-tmnna n-tkllm d-darija mzyan. — I hope to speak Darija well.

nsa y-jib l-ktab. — He forgot to bring the book.
