LESSON 7

Words and Syllables Without Vowels

Lesson objective

In this lesson, you will understand why some Moroccan Arabic words are written with several consonants together and no written vowel.

Words without written vowels

In Darija transcription, some syllables and even complete words may appear without any vowel — and this is completely normal.

English speakers sometimes find this strange, since English is often taught with the idea that every word must contain a vowel. But several consonants really can be pronounced together with no separate vowel between them.

An English example

Think about the English word street. At the beginning, you pronounce s + t + r with no written vowel between them at all — proof that consonants can be pronounced together smoothly.

Why it can feel difficult

Darija sometimes places consonants together in combinations that are unfamiliar to English speakers. Because the combination feels unusual, learners often feel a vowel “should” be there, even when it isn’t.

A sound that may seem like a vowel

Try pronouncing just str on its own — some English speakers hear something close to stir, as though a vowel appeared between the consonants. In reality, that sound is usually just the natural transition your mouth makes moving from one consonant to the next — not a real vowel.

How to practise

Part of learning Darija is becoming comfortable with these new consonant combinations. Practise pronouncing consonants together without deliberately adding a vowel — Darija Academy’s transcription only writes a vowel when there really is one in the word. It may feel unusual at first, but it becomes natural with practice.
