Moroccan Cultural Note

Politeness in Morocco is communicated through words, tone and social warmth. 3afak is important, but greetings and thanks also matter. When requesting something from a stranger or older person, begin with smн li/smнi li or s-salamu 3alaykum. tfḍḍl is often used when giving something or inviting someone to proceed.

Common Learner Mistakes

  • Do not forget the gender difference between smн and smнi.
  • 3ṭini is direct, so add 3afak and use a polite tone.
  • weš n-3awnk? means “Shall I help you?” or “Can I help you?” It is not a request for the other person to help you.
  • Use jib li for “bring me” and 3ṭini for “give me.”
