LESSON 211

Pronunciation of Shedda

What is shedda?

A shedda shows that a consonant is stressed and doubled. In transcription, it is represented by writing the consonant twice. The doubled consonant must be held approximately twice as long as a normal consonant.

Fluid sounds

Sounds such as z and r can simply be held longer.

Stop sounds

With sounds such as b and d, begin making the sound, pause briefly during it, and then complete it.

English comparison

Compare “lay down” with “laid down.” In the first expression, there is one d sound. In the second, the end of “laid” and beginning of “down” create a longer double d.

Shedda can change both pronunciation and meaning. Recognizing and correctly pronouncing shedda is important, especially when working with verbs.
