LESSON 257

The Throne Festival

The Throne Festival is called 3id l-3rš. It is described as the largest Moroccan civil holiday. The festival commemorates the King’s accession to the throne on July 30, 1999.

Celebrations described in the textbook

The celebrations may include parades, patriotic songs, appearances by local government officials, visits between relatives, cleaning and decorating towns, and displaying Moroccan flags.

People from rural areas may visit relatives living in cities. The host family may provide them with food and accommodation during the celebration.

Before the holiday, city workers may clean streets and paint walls. Residents may also be asked to paint their doors, whitewash their houses, and display flags.
