The Imilchil Market Festival

The textbook describes the recreation of an ancient market in the High Atlas Mountains. Traditionally, isolated High Atlas communities gathered once a year near Imilchil, where several mountain paths met.

People came to buy provisions for the coming months, sell goods, and meet people from other communities. The textbook explains that one traditional reason for attending was to find a bride — a man might meet a woman for the first time, pay her dowry, and take her home as his wife.

Some people say this tradition still exists; others say that it is now mainly recreated for tourists. The event remains a large market where many Amazigh people buy supplies for the coming year.
