In this lesson, you will learn how prepositions connect to pronoun endings, and which prepositions are used with specific verbs.

Why prepositions can be difficult

Darija prepositions do not always match English prepositions directly. The same English preposition may be translated using different Darija prepositions, and a preposition can also change meaning according to the verb used with it — this also happens in English (e.g. “she spoke on the rights of homeless people” vs. “I put the book on the table”). With regular practice and exposure, Darija prepositions become more natural.

Some prepositions, such as dyal, take the normal possessive pronoun endings directly (dyali, dyalk, dyalu…). The five prepositions above change slightly when pronoun endings are added, as the next lessons will show.
