LESSON 206

Pronouncing “ġ”

The sound ġ is produced in the same place as x. The difference is: x is voiceless, while ġ is voiced.

Pronunciation exercise

  1. Make the sound x.
  2. Continue using the same mouth and tongue position.
  3. Make the voice box vibrate at the same time.

The result is ġ.

Compare: k and g; x and ġ. The first sound in each pair is voiceless, while the second is voiced. Another way to practise ġ is to think about the throat muscles used when gargling.
