LESSON 206Pronouncing “ġ”
The sound ġ is produced in the same place as x. The difference is: x is voiceless, while ġ is voiced.
Pronunciation exercise
- Make the sound x.
- Continue using the same mouth and tongue position.
- Make the voice box vibrate at the same time.
The result is ġ.
Compare: k and g; x and ġ. The first sound in each pair is voiceless, while the second is voiced. Another way to practise ġ is to think about the throat muscles used when gargling.
