LESSON 254Eid al-Adha
The festival on the tenth day of du l-нijja is l-3id l-kbir, meaning the great feast. This is the annual festival of sacrifice.
The animal selected for sacrifice should be mature and without defects. Families normally sacrifice a sheep or another suitable animal. The textbook describes the meal as being prepared and eaten according to local customs, with different parts of the animal eaten on different days.
Before the feast
People may prepare through personal cleanliness, visiting the barber, going to the hammam, applying henna, prayer, and charity. Henna is used by women on their hands and sometimes their feet.
Gifts may be exchanged, and part of the food may be given to poor people. The main prayer takes place in the morning at the mosque.
