LESSON 258

Green March Day

Green March Day is celebrated with large parades in many parts of Morocco. It commemorates the mobilization of 350,000 Moroccans for the march into the Sahara territory.

The march began on November 6, 1975. The first marchers left Tarfaya and entered the Spanish-controlled territory under the leadership of the Prime Minister at that time, Ahmed Osman.

During later celebrations, some people who participated in the original march may dress in green and recreate the march.
